Mother's Day Essay Winner Announced
Third, fourth and fifth graders from the five elementary schools in Toombs County recently had the opportunity to participate in a Mother’s Day Essay Contest.  The students were asked by K E Butler and Co Jewelers to write an essay about why their mother or mother figure deserves a white gold diamond pendant as a gift for Mother’s Day.  Several hundred essays were submitted and thoughtfully read by the jewelry store staff while not aware of the essay’s title, its writer’s name or school name.  The task of choosing a winning essay judged on creativity, presentation, and correspondence with the theme by its writer proved to be difficult.  The staff elected to choose an Honorable Mention essay in addition to the winning essay.   “Living Life with a Diamond,” written by fourth grader, Amelia Richter, Toombs Central Elementary, was chosen as the winning essay.  “The Best Mom,” written by third grader, Lydia B. Horne, Vidalia Heritage Academy, received Honorable Mention.
A 14KW gold diamond pendant was presented by Jessica Aaron, store manager and Earl Butler, jeweler, to Amelia during the annual Honors Day at Toombs Central Elementary on Friday, May 12, 2017.  Her mother, Jennifer Richter, was in the audience and came forward to receive the beautiful diamond pendant from her daughter for Mother’s Day.  Amelia’s fourth grade teacher, Lorie Tillman, received 14KW diamond stud earrings.
Amelia’s essay, entitled “Living Life with a Diamond” is printed in its entirety as written by Amelia.

My mother is a diamond in my life.  She shines all the time.
I love her because she is not a selfish person.  She works two jobs, but always makes time for me and others.
My mother always encourages me to do my best in everything I do.
She is my best friend because I can tell her anything.
I love doing activities with my mother such as getting our nails painted, shopping, cooking, reading and painting.
I would love to see my mother wear a diamond pendant so she can shine on the outside like she does on the inside.
